About Ken Skaggs
I know it isn’t politically correct to write your own bio. But I refuse to do what a lot of people do- write one acting like I’m someone else who is writing about me! So hey, this is me and what you see is what you get.
I am not the same Ken Skaggs that used to play in the Glenn Campbell Band, although I seem to have a lot in common with him. Coincidentally, we are both musicians who are now doing some web design. Unlike my country counterpart, I’m a big city boy. I grew up in Chicago and San Francisco, and my music is mostly blues and alternative rock originals. I dropped out of College so I could work full time. (I had kids young.)
Throughout my life I did a lot of different kinds of work, but I was always an entrepreneur at heart and enjoyed work at home. I was mostly a truck driver, but I was constantly trying different things. I’d get a big idea, try it for a while, and when times got tough I’d go back to my real bread and butter- trucking.
I’ve had many of my own businesses over the years (seal-coating, asphalt, landscaping, towing, selling vending machines, tree service, auto repair shops, and more). Some have done well, for a while. And some not so. As a writer, having such a diverse background has really helped me understand people and character.
I actually sat down and counted all my jobs one day, and I can honestly say- it’s over one hundred. (Probably about 110.) My lines of work included; ambulance chaser, taxi driver, salesman, store manager, radio personality, public speaker, skip tracer, repo-man, investigative journalist, and of course, truck driver.
When I was in College I studied things I wanted to learn. I wasn’t trying to get a degree, I just wanted to learn about a few things. I always knew I wanted to be a writer and a musician. So the classes I took reflected that and gave me the foundation I needed throughout my endeavors.
The longest job I ever held was at Ten Four Magazine. I was a regular Columnist there for ten years, and also wrote a bunch of trucking articles for my own website those same years. (Of course I had other jobs in the meantime, probably fifteen or so during that time.) I just quit Ten Four in 2010 when I hurt my back. I knew I’d never drive a truck again and I just wanted to turn the page on trucking all together.
Since then, after a few months of painful, slow recovery, I am now self-employed full time as a writer- finally! Please browse the site and don’t forget to check out “My Sites” on the right. I post articles at them all regularly (sort of). Or, check out the feeds at the bottom of this page.
Lately, I have been enjoying the freedom of being self employed, and working at home. Since 2000 I have been concentrating on writing and web design. I choose my own hours, and won’t do anything I don’t agree with. It’s a good feeling.
If you need someone to do some speaking at your safety meeting, streetwise writing, investigative work, radio, news, or anything in between, give me a call. I’m not cheap, but I always do what I say, say what I’ll do, won’t do anything illegal or immoral, and finish what I start.
If you got this far, thank you for your time. I’ll add more another day. Now that you know me, why not leave a comment below and tell me about you. Or better yet, hire me for a cool, short-time gig!
